Increasing staff involvement and motivation is critical to NHS reform. NHS Mutual: engaging staff and aligning incentives to achieve higher levels of performance looks at the factors that drive staff engagement in the health service; examining various models of employee ownership in use within and outside the NHS. It concludes that there are at least five ways in which employee ownership can be fostered within the health service, and that the time is now right for the Government to support those willing to test different approaches.   View report |  View summary briefing

Progress to Quality: A Strategic Lens on the Latest Evidence

Our two-day summit on health policy held in the spring drew some very gratifying comments from those who attended.  This high-level participative and networking conference examined the progress of the NHS towards higher performance, and explored how health care organisations might accelerate the path to good quality and efficient care.

Health in a Cold Climate:           Developing an Intelligent Response to the Financial Challenges Facing the NHS

Chris Ham's report draws on discussions at a series of four seminars, the aim of which was to explore the financial context in which the NHS is working and opportunities for using resources more efficiently.  Each seminar was led by experts in NHS management and finance and participants included leaders from the public and private health care sectors.

Only Connect: Policy Options for Integrating Health and Social Care

Summarising discussions from a series of seminars exploring the issues involved in achieving closer integration of health and social care which focused on areas of the country where primary care trusts and local authorities have experience of working together on issues of common concern; this report discusses emerging messages, and identifies the policy implications.
